Step 3: Craft Your Key Messages

What do your ideal volunteers need to hear from you?

Once you’re clear on who you’re talking to, it’s time to think about what you’ll say.

Your campaign messages need to quickly communicate details about the role, the benefits of volunteering, and how someone can get in touch if they are interested.

Step 3 of the workbook will help you collect your thoughts. Then use your answers to craft your messages.

Write Copy That Attracts The Right Volunteers

  1. It’s about them, not about you. Focus less on what you need and more on what benefits they’ll get from volunteering. Use what you know about your ideal volunteer to speak to what motivates them, such as making a difference, making new friends, or getting volunteer work experience.
  2. Clearly and simply describe the volunteer role you are recruiting for. Share what’s involved, the commitment required, and the difference the role makes.
  3. Use language that your ideal volunteer can relate to. Younger volunteers, for example, will resonate better with current, casual language and short, action-oriented sentences. Avoid sounding formal or bureaucratic.
  4. Make it easy to reach out and take the next step with a clear call to action.
